Nuchal Translucency

It's natural to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety during pregnancy. One of the recommended early pregnancy tests is the nuchal translucency screening.

I want to provide you with clear and comprehensive information about this test, empowering you to make informed decisions.

What is a Nuchal Translucency Test?

A nuchal translucency test is an ultrasound scan performed between the 11th and 13th week and 6 days of pregnancy. During this test, the thickness of the fluid-filled space at the back of your baby's neck is measured. By combining this measurement with your age and medical history, we can estimate the statistical risk of your baby having Down syndrome or other chromosomal conditions.

Why is this exam important?

  • Early detection: This test allows for early detection of an increased risk for Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions, even before other abnormalities can be seen on ultrasound.

  • Preparation: If the test results indicate an increased risk, further testing can be done to confirm or rule out a diagnosis, allowing you to prepare accordingly.

  • Peace of mind: For most women, the test will show a normal result, providing reassurance and peace of mind.

What happens during the exam?

The test is non-invasive and painless. It takes about 10-15 minutes and is performed using an ultrasound machine.
You will lie on a bed while I gently move the transducer over your abdomen.

The nuchal translucency test is a valuable tool for assessing the risk of Down syndrome and other chromosomal conditions. The test is non-invasive and painless. It's important to remember that the test result is statistical, and further testing may be needed to obtain a definitive diagnosis.
