Early Anatomy scan
An anatomical scan, also known as a morphology scan or anomaly scan, is a detailed ultrasound examination of a developing fetus.
Why is it important?
This scan is crucial for several reasons:
-
Detecting Structural Abnormalities: The scan allows for a comprehensive assessment of the fetus's major organs and body systems. It can identify potential structural abnormalities, such as heart defects, neural tube defects (like spina bifida), kidney abnormalities, and skeletal issues.
-
Assessing Fetal Growth: The sonographer measures the fetus's head, abdomen, and thigh bone to estimate gestational age and assess growth patterns.
-
Determining Fetal Position: The scan helps determine the baby's position within the uterus, which can be important for planning the delivery.
