Prenatal ultrasound screening
Prenatal ultrasound screening for detection of fetal anomalies is an ultrasound examination performed at the various stages of pregnancy.
The exam is performed when there is a suspicion of abnormal development of one or more of the fetal systems, as shown by a routine system review, findings in other tests, family medical history or other risk factors.
What does the test include?
A targeted systems review focuses on a specific system or organ, depending on the existing concern. For example, if a heart defect is suspected, the test will focus on the heart and large blood vessels.
The doctor performing the test will use advanced ultrasound techniques to review the system or organ in as much detail as possible.
Also, later on in the test - we will also look at the rest of the systems and organs of the fetus in order to verify their normality as well as to rule out other defects/problems.
It is important to note:
-
Prenatal ultrasound screening is not a definitive diagnostic test.
-
The results of the test are a statistical evaluation only, and should be considered according to the medical history and the findings of other tests.
-
Decisions regarding the continuation of the pregnancy should be made after thorough consideration, in consultation with the gynecologist and other professional medical staff.
